Our brain tricks us into thinking we've learned something because we are familiar with it. While familiarity is important on the road to truly understanding something, its really only a pit stop on a long and winding journey. A journey by which the destination can only be reached through deliberate thoughtful practice. To really learn anything, you need experience.

Similar situation. Here is what I did:

    1. When I'm home, the phone goes away.

    2. Made an extra effort to just hangout and listen.

    3. Set specific times for specific purposes online and communicate those in advance.

After I implemented those 3 steps my wife appreciated the effort and makes an effort to be more accommodating of my reading.
