  • Posted to Show DN: Normal Software - insights and ideas from businesses outside of tech , Jun 27, 2017

    Hey Designer News!

For first time entrepreneur, they always say to focus on solving a problem ... but when I was getting started with my own startup, I never felt like I encountered enough problems that had a clear solution that could be a company. So my friend and I went out to talk to business owners to try to discover what problems they needed solving and how we could better design software for them.

Since we both came from a tech /design background, we knew nothing about the issues faced by restaurant owners, construction crew managers, architects, etc etc. We decided to document our learnings from all of these conversations in a website called Normal Software (https://www.normalsoftware.com).

We learned a ton from our conversations so I wanted to share with you all in case you find any ideas from our chats that might be worth pursuing! For example, we learned about the crazy drone technology that is being used by a walnut farmer, the really bad accounting software used by a restaurant, and the whole industry of software built just for physical therapists.

You can read more about the project here: https://medium.com/@julia.enthoven/introducing-normal-software-48305be7d07

Thanks for checking it out! Eric

    Hi designer news,

I put together a collection of text shadow examples that I hope might be helpful for your next project. Those long text shadows seem to be all the rage now. Would love to hear your feedback!

    Thanks, Eric

Thanks for the comments Keni. I agree that as it is currently, there is a lot of sifting through pairings that aren't exactly ideal. We are definitely trying to find the right balance between generating a variety of pairings and making sure each pairing is high quality. Right now, we went the direction of making generation easy, but I agree that as a V2 we'll have to scale that back and improve the quality of the pairings.

    Hi Dennis,

Really appreciate you checking out the project! Agreed that some of the pairings aren't the best... The idea was to make it really easy to try a new pairing (just by hitting the spacebar) but we do need to improve the pairing quality overall. Definitely something on our roadmap!

    Thanks, Eric

    Hi Sacha,

Thanks a lot for the feedback. Glad you like the tool, and I agree completely that the font pairings need to improve. Right not it isn't completely random (we do use a variety of parameters) but because there's so many different fonts it is hard to be as good as human curation. That said, we are actively working on improving the pairings and adding an element of curation. Appreciate the feedback!

Hi Joe! Thanks a lot for the feedback. Yes, that's definitely on our roadmap. We wanted to get the V1 out as soon we could so we decided to push font selection to V2. That said, you can hack around it a bit if you know the name of your font. For example, if you want to pair Roboto with something, you can just replace the first font in the URL with the name "Roboto" like this: https://www.mixfont.com/Roboto+Domine

Hi Designer News, wanted to share a side project that I've been hacking around on. I wanted to make a really easy way to generate new font pairing ideas, and showcase them as if they were part of a real app or website. It turned into Mixfont (https://www.mixfont.com) and I hope it can be helpful when choosing fonts for your next project. Would love to hear your thoughts!
