Have to say this is the best colour tool around.

If you think $9.99 is expensive, then I'd suggest taking a look at FontExplorerX or Extensis Fusion

Get Explorations in Typography. It's one of the few books that give examples of typographic lockups, ranging from simple to experimental. However the real value of this book comes in the margin notes explaining the reasoning behind each decision.

She also has an iOS app, but I'd only recommend getting it if you have an iPad as it's severely limited on the phone.

And becoming a good typesetter isn't limited to UI or print, but a necessity for any designer. You just need to learn the affordances for each medium.

Honestly, I wouldn't even bother with the official App Store app. Use the Beta for production work, it's consistently miles ahead of the App Store with much needed features and fixes.

*At your own risk of course. But then again, I like to live dangerously.

Looks good and appreciate the curated selection of main content, so I won't repeat what's already been said.

One thing I'd suggest would be to switch the order of the 'My Role' and 'The Challenge'. I was very confused as to what the role section ->

Design, develop, and mix every element from scratch.

was referring to without the context of the challenge.

In my mind it makes more sense to set the context first then state what part you had in it. Second, why not make the entire color blocks on the home page clickable as well?

    Keep it up!

  • Posted to Do you charge your clients Hourly? How is that possible?, in reply to James Stiff , Jan 26, 2015

Definitely can be the case, however if you find you're idling time away to be able to charge for extra hours just to make ends meet you're not charging enough per hour.

I usually play it by ear and charge either a project sum or by hour depending on client on type of project.

One thing that I'd definitely recommend is that you start logging hours for everything, even if you're paid by project or day, this way you can review and start to get rough patterns for how long certain types of projects take. From here it's easier to calculate what's the bare minimum you need to charge for a project for it to be worth it.

Also while I wouldn't blindly follow the numbers on this site, it asks some important questions to consider whenever taking on a project. How Much Should I Charge?

I'm a fan of On The Grid podcast, can come off as a bit self-righteous at times, but they cover a lot of relevant topics and tend to focus more on the higher level theoretical ideas, the professional practice of a moral designer, and other such existential dilemmas I tend to think about as well.

I'd also second Ivan Bjelajac's recommendation for Stuff You Should Know and as others have mentioned 99% Invisible.

I do have to say, more and more frequently I'm left feeling disappointed at how shallow the coverage of topics are at 99PI. I personally would prefer less frequent but longer episodes, to have time to actually cover subjects in depth—might be just me though.
