With a subscription you are locked in to having to pay for each year/month to continue to using the product. You can continue to use Sketch when your license expires. You just pay to receive updates.

That's not what is happening here. You can continue to use Sketch for as long as you like if you don't wish to extend your license. If you want to continue to receiving new updates, then you do.
