I come from a Product Management/Design pov, but am a product manager for a collaborative care platform that includes staff and patient applications:
Some good resources: Design for Care by Peter H Jones: https://rosenfeldmedia.com/books/design-for-care/
Overall I would say: reduce chrome/decoration, carefully design data visualizations that create meaning and are actionable.
Design clear visual affordances. If you are designing for people age 40+ and/or people with chronic diseases, contrast and type hierarchy are particularly important.
Focus on optimizing the signal-to-noise ratio in the UI.
Get the design in the browser as early as possible. Observe patients using the app. as early and often as you can.
Hope this helps! Good luck.
