Agreed. He might've been interested in this maybe 10 years ago

    Very robust and inspiring.

'Tools, not rules' is a great direction for implementing brand identities. Done enough brand guidelines at this point to know the rules will always be broken and unenforceable.

Long but interesting. A lot of details and side comments match up with the unauthorized biography of him released a while ago.

If you are in a pinch with Sketch this method will do.

The main problem with this method is you can't mix the two together unless you track first and then 'kern' after and then if you ever wanted to change it in the future you have to do the process all over again.

Tracking should only ever apply to the entire text object, not individual character pairs. Kerning pairs are the exceptions.

If you can find a copy of Emigre 70 it's well worth it. The collection of essays is extremely interesting and catalogues the real design debates of the late 1980s onward. Post-Mac and really pre-internet.

Another great book is Gerrit Noordzij's The Stroke. It's a great book about creating type and a metaphor for understanding how your tools influence your work.

Most recently I picked up 100 Years of Swiss Graphic Design and every page is filled with the best work and documentation. Designed by NORM too!

    Edit: Apostrophe

Suffer?? Maybe mildly inconvenienced if cloud.typography switches around or you can no longer license certain typefaces. If anything I think it will serve as a great example for designers of what not to do when entering business deals.

Also gives Tobias the opportunity to set up shop and kill it.

  • Posted to Ask DN: PSD to HTML being dead in a large agency? , Jan 16, 2014

By the pace that print designers have been able to get rid of getting or having to send QuarkExpress files I'm guessing it's going to be a solid 3-5 years before we see a real shift in larger agencies move to a completely non-PSD workflow.

As more and more people see the benefits in using more specialized tools and being able to communicate their ideas through in-browser mockups it will spread and those still stuck in Photoshop will be left behind.

Agreed. The overall concept is good; a how-to rip us off but you can't because we do xyz so well. Execution is lacking and distasteful, especially with the snide remarks.
