IMHO, it is so incredibly important to have a broad—yet deep—understanding of design, its history, and what it means to design. Put simply, read—both the classics and the new classics. A few classic examples include The Elements of Typographic Style, Grid Systems in Graphic Design, The Vignelli Canon, & Less and More.
And it never hurts to email your heroes in a nice, professional manner. Don’t, however, make it seem like you are just trying to get something from them. Just something friendly! Ask them if they’re interested in chatting, whether it’s Skype or over coffee. You never know where that could take you :)
It may seem like an obvious thing, but there’s also a lot to be learned by simply following one’s heroes online. Twitter has worked wonders for me here.
Finally, don’t cut out everything else in your life for sitting at a computer; so much of design is taking one’s experiences and applying them.
Also, hey—I’m not a seasoned designer by any means either, but I’ve gained so much from doing all of these. Just my two cents! Best of luck to you! :)
Well this is kinda creepy, but I remember seeing this on her Instagram a while ago: http://instagram.com/p/nzMjfmF2An/
I love Aubrey Johnson’s. http://www.aubrey.me/
I love that it’s full of Okay Type!
Yep, I checked for it and didn’t see it, then of course when I refreshed after posting, I saw Dan’s post.
I think Proxima Nova has become much more ubiquitous, especially since it’s included in Typekit.
Currently, I switch to the new wallpaper that Sebastiaan de With posts each week at http://dewith.com/. They’re facet-heavy and so, so wonderful. Previously, I checked http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper/downloads/date/any/ for retina wallpapers and Kuvva.
I’m planning on going to the Chicago event. Anyone else?
Honest question: Do people actually believe all the ridiculous rumors?

I’m interested in working in digital editorial design and Vox is a team whose work I often admire. So apologies that this is a little vague, but I’d love any insight on what you look for in potential candidates and/or your hiring process for design team members.
Thanks!
