Aktiv Grotesk has grown to become my go-to sans serif font. Cool to see more mainstream outlets using it!

I (attempt) to produce and mix/dj dance music. The trouble is finding the energy after work to actually do it.

Though I've had a lot of trouble lately finding the energy to work on it I get a lot of my creative satisfaction producing dance music on the side.

    Happy 808 day DN!

As an amateur/bedroom music producer I've always been fascinated with the impact and history of the TR-808. While trying to learn the new Web Audio API I attempted to try and recreate a few of the sounds by referencing the Sound on Sound Synth Secrets series and the block diagrams of the 808 itself. It became addicting and once I had most of the sounds done, I figured recreating the interface/functionality was the next logical step.

This is a completely client-side app made with React, Redux, and the Web Audio API where all the sounds are being synthesized by the browser (look mom, no samples!). If anything this was a really intense exercise in learning all of these web technologies and was more fun than Iā€™m personally willing to admit.

Feel free to ask me any questions, and I hope you enjoy it!

    Two technical things:

    • You have console logging happening on every scroll event. This is certainly useful for debugging but it isn't free (performance-wise) in production
    • The homepage itself is 10MB, most of it being from images. On a 3G network the page doesn't display until 10 seconds in and takes 2 MINUTES for all the images to load. In a best case scenario, your site will cost your users 60 cents.

All that said it's a really pretty site!

My biggest issue with this is it appends to the browser history which means if you'll need to press the back button twice to get out of the page.
