Basically the reason I think that the work that @fat does is important, and not made redundant by W3C et al is the fact that he weaves the raw evidence of IRC logs and mailing lists into a narrative. The voice he speaks in is one that we recognise too, because his sardonic tone is that same one that's so endemic to the English-speaking internet. I guess what I'm saying is that he's managed to historicise the Internet BY looking back and laughing at our absurd hacks.
