I agree — and to beat the analogy into the ground, I definitely spend too much time in donut shops. I go other places for my industrial/architectural/hardware/3D/illustration muffins, but I don't think anyone would be sad if you brought some of them here.
I'm with you on the "diversity of design is important", but don't you feel like maybe this question is a little like going into a donut shop and asking where all the fucking muffins are?
There's a subtle difference here that the author and Paula are hinting at, but not making crystal clear: when you work for free in an empowering fashion, you are the one with complete creative control, and you're typically calling the decision shots, not the client (though certainly, you want to deliver something that will meet their needs and solve their problem).
If you're taking on shitty projects for free where the client is being a bear about iteration, taking creative control — that's not what this article is about. Don't take those. Get paid.
