How are they not software companies? It's not just Google. Pick up almost any household-name software - Amazon, Spotify, Twitter, Facebook, Insta, Snapchat, Slack, Microsoft Office, Wikipedia… there's motion in all of them.

Animations are a part of almost every major software now. Google has entire teams of motion designers. I struggle to think of well-designed software that doesn't have meaningful animation these days. Let's not forget every video game from the last 30 years too.

Some dodgy stuff happening with the colours. At least in chrome on a 5k iMac

    No you can't.

I'm almost certain these are all made completely with After Effects. Some of the animation hints that they're not interactive prototypes. I'm not sure what you mean about not-grainy though? AE or QT recordings shouldn't be grainy unless they've been badly compressed.

Twitch and YouTube get away with it because:

    a) they actively encourage people to buy the games, so games companies turn a blind eye to it.

    b) because of the performance/commentary/production value it's classed as derivative fair use

Would anyone mind screens hotting the site? Kickass is blocked in the UK, at least by my ISP

Nailed it. Been using Mondo in the wild for a couple of weeks, and so far I'm finding it really useful, lots of great little details. I downloaded the Atom app this week out of interest and was struck by how terrible the UI and UX is. It's still early days for both companies, so will be interesting to see the differences when they're out of beta.

Lots of assumptions in here. I'd like to see some actual data.

    Things that weren't mentioned:

Image grid views help people who might not speak the language very well, children, and people with poorer vision to use your product.

'Hasty Selections' aren't always a bad thing. If the user isn't looking for something specific, you might want to encourage exploration.

A lot of this comes down to context, and the quality of your text labels and images. We need to make sure we use descriptive, helpful labels and imagery. This is where user testing comes in.

Also the statement that 'Most users are on the go and don’t have a lot of time when they’re on a mobile site' - efficiency is always good, but I'm not sure how true this statement is anymore.

If we're going to decide on a winner though, I'd go with something like this. A list view with imagery to support:
