    Looks nice. Better is subjective.

It is cool to see an entire year in a component, but it is actually hard to decipher quickly by scanning. I think people are more used to each month broken out in month blocks with Sunday through Saturday rows (quicker to scan / pick the month / date they are interested in...). I am also not sure how actually useful this would be within an application somewhere... what are the actual goals of how a person would interact with this?

I am confused to whether you were working for the company selling the actual goods or the third party (payment processor/shopping cart).

Yes, it does make sense from a business perspective if you were the third party providing the payment processing layer to not want to provide a way to use PayPal if you did not get a cut in this respect, but this is clearly not the best decision if the business would actually sell more and if the actual customers would be happier... and I am assuming that you felt it wrong to charge an arbitrary fee (the same or less than what you make via credit/debit) to the actual company per transaction if the user chose PayPal? Would it be worth it for the company who is actually selling goods to pay you this arbitrary fee for enabling PayPal, if it meant more transactions and happier customers for them?

All of this has a lot of 'what ifs' and you never truly know until you test. You mention a possible solution to hiding PayPal behind some sort of expand/collapse panel... Which in a sense makes sense - have it defaulted to the credit / debit card with the fields shown and an option to choose PayPal.

I guess your article is more proposing the question 'Have you had similar experiences to this?'... though I am yearning for actual data and results of real testing, rather than 'getting blocked' by the decision makers at hand.

Yes, there have been times where I have designed products that are a bit more difficult than the 'easiest' possible way to make it through an interface, though, as far as I remember, this is more due to making sure that the person (user) understands everything that is happening in the process or flow of the application, not because of competing interests of companies involved.
