What's interesting about this is the ones that you look at and go 'Why does Apple need to have a desktop app for that?' A good example is 'AppControl'. While the conceptualised app here is fine, and given the appropriate APIs could definitely exist as an indie app, it makes you think 'Why would I do that management stuff on my Mac? The mac doesn't need to have that anymore. I'll do it on my phone.'

Wow. This used to be the other way around, very heavily. The biggest downside about the Mac was the lack of decent software in some areas. And Microsoft gave the Mac the shittest version of Messenger they could muster up. You could get other clients (Trillian, Adium), but you'd have to explain to all of your friends that your Mac was the reason you couldn't video call them.

Disagree. The #channelname right at the top, the channels listed there in the darkened sidebar, the chat having a persons avatar in a circle, then their name in bold, then the text of when the message was sent, then the message in plain text below, so no chat bubbles. Messages from the same person grouped. Messages from different people separated with a separator, and, a date in the middle, if it's been a bit of time. I could go on for much much longer about all the finer details that are exactly the same.

I'm making a messaging app at the moment, and there's an awful lot of small decisions you have to make. Chat bubbles or not? How wide do you make them? Do you display avatars? For both users? Do your own messages go to the left or the right? How big is the spacing between messages? Does that change over longer periods of time? So so many little things.

This is a clone of Slack.

I work at out of a co-working space called Google Campus London. They have a few options:

• A cafe downstairs where you can sit down with your laptop and work. It's crazy down there - like an underpaid workforce of hipsters. It's free to work there, presumably with the assumption that you'll buy something from the cafe.
• TechHub is the co-working space I'm in. It's upstairs, and gives you a lot more room. They have 'hotdesks', where you can bring in your laptop and work all day. It's all secure, so you can leave your computer while you go out for lunch, and they have a kitchen stocked with tea, coffee, bread, jam, nutella etc.. they have waffles and stuff every other Tuesday, and then they have a members drinks once a month. I think the hotdesks are something like £350 for a year, and you can work here 9am-7pm. Really not bad.
• Third option, most expensive option, the one I'm on - you can get your own desk for about £320 a month. Keep all your stuff on it, it's yours, nobody else will ever sit there.

So there's some really good options, all in the same building. All great for meeting people in the same position as you. It's located just down from Old Street. You can get a tour of TechHub too, or of course you can try out the cafe any time, since it's free.
