Background Blur does work, just not the way it used to. Changing the opacity of the layer won't make the background blur anymore, but changing the opacity of the fill will.
BTW, both ways of distributing you mention are working for me. You might want to elaborate on the exact issues you're having.
I've released v0.2 with a fix for an issue that prevented dynamic text layers from properly syncing their position and size. I've added update instructions to the README:
Thanks to @andreaswah and @lmartins for reporting the issue. And thanks everyone for the support and the nice words!
It's been tested on the App Store version, so yes, it works fine. One thing to be aware of, however, is that if you're also running the beta version, the beta might set itself as the default app to handle .sketch and .sketchplugin files. So when you double-click the plugin file, it will get installed in the beta app, not the sandboxed version.
If you need to install the plugin manually, you can open Plugins/Custom Script, then click the gear icon, then Open Plugins Directory. Then just copy the .sketchplugin file in there and you should be good to go.
This has been a pain point for many people, myself included, so I thought I'd do something about it until we get a native implementation. Here's a video demo: https://vimeo.com/83370438
