How do you feel about the Designer News search experience?

over 5 years ago from , Product Design Lead

Does anyone else find the Designer News search a little off? I find this a site a great resource, but sometimes when I'm trying to find an article I've seen recently, or a topic I'm researching the search hasn't been very helpful. My main complaint is the ability to filter by most recent on a general search. This feature is available if I first search for my term, then add a filter like "stories" or "comments."

    The search is frustrating.

Haven't used it in a while cuz it wasn't working for me.

Having said that, I feel like it's more about showing as many results as possible in as little screenspace as possible, and filtering (post date?). Mostly because it'll be super hard to find certain items as "design framework" seeing as there's a billion and a half on here.

I really wish there was a way to do a "Posts from:"

    • All Time
    • Past Year
    • Past Month
    • Past Week
    • Past Day
    • Past Hour

    And a "Sort by:"

    • Relevance
    • Top
    • New
    • Comments

Great comment Matt! I forwarded this to our dev for some inspiration.

We’re for sure aware search is subpar at the moment. :/

That sounds fantastic. And adding the possibility to filter by badge would make it perfect for me.

        Daniel,

We've talked about this! Possibly even adding more badges, ie "Medium" and then being able to filter out those posts from even showing up for you on the home page. Just ideas we're tossing around!

Should be able to sort by date. Do a search about something you saw 3 weeks ago and you get things from 5 years ago more at the top than the latest.

This. Search results seem to be in some random order which is of no use. I rarely search because there's really no point.

It's possible - but you have to click on "choose one" and filter to a type of item before you can sort. Why "newest first" isn't the default sort order I've no idea...

    I usually just google "$searchTerm site:designernews.co"

Yep. Hey everyone: Do this! Do it for every website in the world. The same site: works for DuckDuckGo, too.

And, being Google Search or DuckDuckGo, you get access to other options, like being able to restrict the time range. It’s great. Would search that way again.

Despite recent comments that things are going to be worked on, it does indeed appear any development here has ceased. It was stated that staffing numbers were increased, but for the life of me I can't figure out what they are working on.

Sorry for the late reply to this thread Ken, currently in the middle of a move.

I can promise you we’re working on a ton of stuff under the hood right now. Downvotes, invite only registration and many other features often requested are INDEED being developed.

Thanks, good to know. Is search one of the features to be addressed?

It is! We're still figuring out the best plan of attack for the changes people want to see regarding search, but it's a bit lower on the list of updates that users have asked for.

the "popular/latest/oldest" sort should be there by default, whether or not I select a category.

I am always completely shocked to learn people are searching for anything on this site. The content posted is so eclectic I wouldn’t even remember what I was looking for.

The annoying part for me is that I have to use search in order to go to my own profile on mobile. Due to there not being any way to quickly go to your profile on mobile.

I keep using Google Search because it allows date filters. Type "designernews.co: whatyourelookingfor" without "", way better than DN search.

The search results should micic Reddit's, which isn't saying much because Reddit's could be better.

It's ridiculous how limited the search tool is.

I'm still getting tripled comment notifications on my profile page, and after going back to the page the latest comment shown is from 2 years ago. Let's fix the broken stuff too!

Seems fine? I normally just use google site: search so this was my first time on it

And since we are mentioning broken features, the duplicate post warning dingus thing hasn't worked in quite some time, based on member comments.

To add to whats been said: I'd like to see better information density. Right now they take up so much vertical space you can only see like 4 results

There is nobody doing any development or designing on this site. Let's just accept that.

That is simply not true, we’re working hard on a lot of under the hood stuff right now.

Just hold out a little longer, I promise! <3

I get a "404"page every time I go to my notifications page https://www.designernews.co/notifications

This has been there for months, and reported before by me and other users.

Just for you to keep in mind : )

I know, but nobody communicates with us, unless you make a strong statement, like this one. So sorry for doing it like that, but at least we know that someone is here :D

          Thomas,

I was brought on about a month ago, and have been chiming in as often as possible. This post happened while I was in the middle of a move so I jumped in pretty late-this won't happen again. I feel so bad when users feel like no one is here or caring for the site.

I promise we're working on a ton of stuff, hoping to be able to start announcing things this month! As always, feel free to reach out to spenser@designernews.co with any concerns, comments, or things you'd like to see change here on DN.

          Cheers!

Currently, the Information Architecture of 'Designer News Search' is really bad.
