Dream Company + Unsexy Work + Lesser Role?

10 months ago from , Beach Bum

If you could work at one of your dream companies but in doing so meant working on unsexy projects (designing internal tools instead of consumer sites) and taking on a lesser role (leading a team to being an individual contributor), would you? Assume pay would be roughly the same.

And whats wrong with internal tools? People still need to use them, and they also can be sexy ;)

I think it would depend on how much you enjoy your leadership position. Also, if you're itching for a change. You might learn that your "dream company" isn't as great as you thought, or it could be amazing. I say, if you get an offer to work at a place you've always wanted to work, why not take it? If you are happy there, you can work towards a role with more responsibility.

lol I've done much worse work than working on 'unsexy projects' so I wouldn't really give a hoot. It's a foot in the door. If you really want to work there, do it, then just slowly get involved on the better projects.

The fact that you think individual contributions are "lesser" than leading a team contains clues. To both jobs actually.

Yes, I would! People often regret more what they didn't do ("what would've happened if") than what they did even when it goes wrong.

A lot of your concepts might change and by taking a step back you have an opportunity to grow from within, first by listening, soaking up the culture and earning your place with quality work. I'd actually see it as a blessing in disguise.

Good luck with your decision! ⚡️

Apart of me wants to say yes... mainly because I want to know their process and thinking that makes them so successful. Or even try to build something that helps others.

The other half says no, mainly because of past experiences. You will completely love it or hate it. It will be everything you imagined or you will start seeing all the cracks that lay behind the name.
