What shadow logic/gradation you are using in your Design Language?

Material Design is using advanced depth logic mainly achieved by using shadows.

I found out that material design shadows are very strong and much different from the more subtle ones which we can find in the most popular Dribbble shots.

I'm looking for the compromise - shadows which will be useful and having consequent gradation but are not also so strong like in Material Design approach.

What do you think? What approach is your favorite?
