Ask DN: Best way to find freelance jobs

almost 10 years ago from , UI Designer (Freelancer)

Hello DN! I'm considering to start freelancing and would like to ask you what's the best way to find freelance jobs?

Should I directly contact potential clients or should I use freelance job portals to find clients? If the second method is better, which websites would you recommend to find freelance jobs?

It depends on if you're looking to make a living out of solely freelancing, or if you want to do it to supplement your earnings.

Freelancing Portals are good to get work, but the competition is enormous - People Per Hour has an excellent job base, but there are people offering very low hourly rates making it difficult to get the rate you deserve. It's good to get work for a portfolio and a client base, but the earnings aren't the best.

If you have existing clients you can approach that's certainly a great way to go. These are people who already know the quality of your work and professionalism and won't dispute your rate. Having a few reliable clients who give you regular work is a must.

There are a lot of websites, but in my experience it's difficult to stand out. Microlancer seems to be a good community as (I think) they vet who they allow on.

Have you tried freelancing alongside your current job to find what works best for you? Might be good to rest the water before taking the plunge.

    Best of luck!
