It's not always all-or-nothing. I've found the Material icon library really useful in contexts outside the entire Material system — which, in my view, is often too subtle on key affordances for buttons and forms.

You as a designer should only use Material Design if you are actually working for Google, otherwise, you will have a product that looks like a Google product and not your own branding and looking and feel from your company.

No. If you're working on an Android application, you're probably going to use native patterns and design elements, which is Material Design.

You don't have to use all of it for every project. I use the icons frequently for projects, and their grid system and the general layering ethos makes complete sense, but it's not like every design I do uses their colours or Roboto.

I use a bit of a mix as well, like the other commenters here. I quite like the buttons personally, particularly the animated effects on them. A lot of their components like cards etc can come in handy for certain things too, but you can easily make these in your own flavour.

I think with everything, you should take inspiration from other concepts but the interpretation is up to you.

No. Do something different. Something new.
