Pablo, I really don't understand what you're getting at with titles like this. The advice is kind of good, but also contradictory. I'd argue that overthinking and hard work is absolutely part of the process of even getting close to what works (that is, throwing out bad ideas, and knowing the difference.)

In general, I'm worried about this industry when new designers are getting disillusioned so quickly, celebrating relativism and cyclically replacing core professional attitudes. What makes logomarks great hasn't changed much, if at all, in the past 100 years, design systems or not. It's fairly narcissistic to think in one's relatively short tenure of working within design history, all the rules are new or don't matter.

Something must matter. If logos are now "overrated" (clickbait or not) even for designers, then this industry is or on its way to being completely perverse.

Hey, Steven. I think you bring some excellent points. Thanks for taking the time to write this. I should be more careful about the way I present my opinions and let the viewers know that most likely I'm wrong and that they should find their own truth. I'll try to do better next time.

      Again, thanks :)

Thanks for responding. I wouldn't have given this much thought at all had I not really enjoyed many of your tutorials and Sketch videos.

Which makes me wonder if we're all getting too focused on efficiency and tools, and less so on design fundamentals (hence this becoming sort of controversial.)

If I didn't hate looking at my face, I'd have considered making a video called "Plugins are overrated."

Thank you for giving it that much thought and taking the time to write your feedback. I really appreciate it.

Yeah, you might have a point. I'm coming from a place where efficiency is a giant factor in decision-making. Maybe this has made the love for the craft and quality take a hit for some of us.

Lol. I like your plugins idea. I'M TOTALLY GONNA STEAL IT! Just kidding ;)

Click bait / Outrage generation titles are kind of par for the course these days - don't hate the player, hate the game

clickbait. pls stop ruining design industry. it's already broken because of people like you. assuming something's dead or overrated with your whimsy 1-2 or maximum of 3 years of knowledge.

take your fancy 720p camera and start doing slime videos. you'll earn more money out of that.

Pretty sure he hasn't ruined an industry?! Also pretty sure it's not clickbait!

Personally, I don't think the title is the best as it doesn't do the videos any favours. But in general I thought the video was well thought out and a good insight for beginners.

You may have all the industry knowledge in the world (or so you think), but you were at one point... a beginner!

Hey, George. I'm sorry you think that I'm ruining the design industry. It certainly is not my intention, but I understand how it can be looked at that way.

I don't know what you mean by slime videos, lol, but sounds like fun. And yeah, I hope I had a better camera, doing what I can with what I have.

Thank you for taking the time to write your feedback!

Stop ruining the design industry with your subversive cartoons and entertaining videos! Design is serious stuff, there's no place for joking around!

Here George Brown demonstrates the initial thought process of a man that thinks far too highly of his own opinion.

yes, this is the worst advice ever... let's see what he said...

    • Simplify your logo so that it can be used universally
    • Ideas are not original so don't overthink the idea of being the first to do something. (disclaimer don't steal others work)
    • Use typefaces, forms, or objects that are quickly and easily understandable.
    • Use something that represents the company
    • Make sure your logo can be monochromatic.
    • make sure your logo works without trends that come and go like drop shadows and gradients.
    • My advice is don't overcomplicate it follow DESIGN PRINCIPLES keeping it legible, simple, and versatile. -Emphasis on branding
    • Emphasis on how it actually lives and interacts with your brand and the world over how it was created.

hmmmmm..... yeah, yall are special lol.

I don't get why any of you decide to wake up and get on DN on the first place. All you do is hop in front of your computer and become twitter thugs typing away shade knowing that you won't get the taste smacked out of your mouth. I don't know of many people like Pablo who continually give to the design community and despite the shade your through they brush it off and continue to give. Pabs keep doing you and thank you for all that you do. I know so many designers that have grown because of the videos you put out. Designers at all levels, not just people getting into the industry so thanks!

This means so much to me coming from you, Jeremiah! Thanks for writing this. I think people bring some good points, I'm taking the feedback that I find useful.

It's kind of my fault too. I admit that my title was clickbaity. I usually avoid using titles like this but I decided to take a risk this time, lol.

BTW, my Typewolf sweatshirt is kind of my favorite! Any chance you'll have a black one available (instead of charcoal.) I WOULD TOTALLY BUY IT!

Stick to the cartoons lampooning the design industry. Your analysis is better served with this sort of sarcastic cynicism that shouldn't be taken too seriously.

I may recommend not using autofocus on your camera. The camera's focus keeps re-adjusting each time you make a little movement. But kudos on the quality improvement since your first set of videos and continually doing them.

I've started to see this on so many videos, I actually began to think it was a sort of stylistic trend.

    • Pablo Stanley, almost 6 years ago

Hey, Scott! Thanks for the recommendation! I always get super afraid that I will be out of focus through the whole video (it has happened a ton of times before) so I started using the auto-focus on my old Nikon. I'm following your advice and I'll keep the focus locked on future videos. Thank you for the advice <3

The title, click bait or not, made me click. The video was fun and informational. I think people unaware of the thought that goes into a designing logos would learn something. Thanks for sharing, man

I think this video is dealing with too many of general issues addressing just trivial staff. With new technologies logos are changing also and at my opinion it will be interesting to research how technologies and modern taste influenced on logo design. At my opinion, art history represents constant change of "baroquization" and purification of the style - and always something new is thrown out, and this is manifested in the applied art and in the end, in logo design. Those are interesting questions to ask and those answers will be interesting to hear.

Pablo! Te mando todo mi apoyo para tus videos! Love you're work man. The only thing "killing the industry" are people holding on to the way things used to be done. All here for new ideas being explained by thoughtful and talented individuals such as yourself.

This is great advice. The title is controversial, but he makes valid points.

How many times have we celebrated that story of Paula Scher scribbling the citi logo on a napkin? Even still it's pretty rare to find a designer who's so confident in an early concept. Instead we hang 100 sketches on a wall and show how many versions we produce before finding the final concept. It looks important, but it's not always necessary or even good work.

As a designer it's easy to miss the forest for the trees, and I appreciate being reminded. Thanks Pablo

This video would've hit a bit harder if you had demonstrated with an actual (fake) logo design process and examples. It's better to show when you tell.

The AirBnb/Beats "borrowing" stuff with the Metal Gear Solid alert sound was lulz. Also your hair is pretty awesome.

Hey, Andrew! Thanks for the feedback. I agree with you—it's better to SHOWING than TELLING. Maybe I can take your idea and make its own video :)
