IMO asking for upvotes is in poor taste. Not sure if this is against the rules of DN or anything... It gives individuals with large followings an unfair advantage.
Edit Well this is a bit of a contradiction... I just wanted to have a conversation about asking for upvotes on DN, and instead Daryll thinks it's appropriate to say we're Bitching. :/
Too many unwritten rules in this community...
Touche haha.
Still don't think it's a big deal. He has a big following because a lot of designers like what he does. It's not like he's gaming something.
I feel like every conversation in the design community is about how the design community should act. Instead of talking about design.
Crap now I'm doing it.
In my opinion people who already have large followings don't need their voices amplified. Communities should upvote the content they enjoy, not the content people tell them to upvote.
That being said, nothing against Dann personally. He seems like a sweet heart, and I do enjoy lots of his content :)
It's almost like we're a bunch of marketers who disallow marketing

but that what we do
lets just chill out a little huh?
Justin, I have Chill. Justin I swearrrr I have chill. Justinnnnnn do you believe me???
We're just giving him content ideas now
Should designers ask for upvotes?
^ If you have a spare sec please upvote the above comment.
Make a medium post about this, and I'll upvote it everywhere
everyone does this and there's no way to effectively moderate this. they should probably just scrap that from the Guidelines.
Doesn't that undermine the whole purpose of a community driven website? Votes would be worthless if people who have large followings just continuously asked their followers for upvotes. This is just my opinion though, would love to hear out any one who disagrees.
oh, i totally agree with you. this video has 50+ upvotes and is more than half ads.
i just don't see a way of stopping this practice.
Who's Daryll?
Hey Daryl, DN has given me a voice as a designer. I feel that asking for upvotes contradicts the whole purpose of a community driven website. I'm sorry if being critical of this has offended you as it seems that we have different opinions. I'd love to hear what you have to say :).
Btw I've admired your work for many years!
No need to apologise, I'm not offended or anything. I'm just poking fun as I normally do. However, I always find on DN that no matter what the content is, someone will always find something to complain about, that's what I was getting at. Not to say that your comment isn't justified, it is in the rules as mentioned above and I do agree. Glad you're a fan of my work, do you have work I can check out? I'm always curious.

As opposed to the rest of the Internet, which is known for being a wonderland of positivity and appreciation, I suppose? ;)
i've always wanted to be an astronaut.
Still love the content, so I have no qualms on the self-promotion bit.
Hello everyone! I just created an account—had no idea "community guidelines" as I'm not a part of this community. Maybe we can have Maxwell Lind delete this post for us? Max, mind just scratching this whole post off DN?
Excited to be here.
Keep up the good work dude!
Welcome man. Can't wait for the next Monday.
Welcome!
There's no need to delete the post. Max posted it, but regardless, self promotion is completely acceptable here as long as it's labeled as such.
The issue some are having is that DN Guidelines stipulate that you should not use social media in an effort to get more votes for your post here on DN. It's harmless... you didn't know... now you do... moving on. :-)
And to squelch any potential "drama" about favoritism or anything, it's how it would have been handled with any first time offender - whether they were the Gradient Nostradamus or not...
Mondays are better. Thanks, Dann!
Agreed! Great way to start out my day :)
Dann on upcoming video:
"The top story on Designers News this week is... me - let's move on"
I met Dann years back and I remember him as quiet and reserved. Who knew he was so energetic and funny? Dann's crushing this series. So entertaining. I hope he keeps it up.
Dann is one of my favorite designers to follow as of late.
I can see why this would appeal to some people but it's not really my thing
