Gif Brewery 3: http://gifbrewery.com/
This is the right answer.
Over a year ago, I spent 2 months trying to find the answer to this question. I tried LiceCap, GifRocket, Photoshop, ImageMagick on the command line, Giphy, and a few other tools.
In terms of creation, editing, and quality (and I use the term quality extremely loosely when it comes to gif), this is way better than anything else I tested.
Indeed, this tool is quite powerfull…!
My new favourite tool. Giphy also recently bought it and made it completely free.
This belong actually to Gfycat ;)
+1 for LiceCap.
This is.
I'm using it, good tool
Photoshop.

I’m with you on that one, if you need fine grained control, it’s pretty hard to beat. A bit more expensive and complicated than the other options though.
I agree, but OP asked for 'the best free' GIF creator.
Ah. Serves me right for not reading! Sorry OP!
Gifox is a very nice tool
100% worth the couple bucks
Giphy capture is the best. Super high quality and low file size.
I personally love using Giphy Capture. Tons of useful features live adjusting playback speed, editing length of captures, setting gif quality. It's pretty handy.
The best way to answer this question is with another question — what type of GIF are you trying to create?
I agree with most of the suggestions listed above, but would add a few thoughts…
Best free tool for fine-tuning video files, links to videos (e.g. YouTube) and other GIFs on a desktop (Mac): GIF Brewery (by Gyfcat)http://gifbrewery.com/
Best free tool for capturing interactions, and other motion directly from your desktop (Mac) display: GIPHY Capture (formerly GifGrabber)https://giphy.com/apps/giphycapture
Best free tool for creating GIFs from Live Photos on your iPhone⁺: Motion Stills (by Google)https://get.google.com/motionstills/
⁺Best free tool for creating GIFs from Live Photos on your iPhone…that you can easily send to people (smaller file size): GIPHY Camhttps://giphy.com/apps/giphycam (note: Live Photos appear to import in reverse (mirror-image), so it’s worth converting the Live Photo to a movie clip in another app, like Google’s Motion Stills app)
Best free tool for creating GIFs in mobile overall: GIPHY Cam (iOS and Android) https://giphy.com/apps/giphycam (note: Android version has trouble linking to video folder; iOS version appears to have issues with Live Photos importing in reverse, as mentioned above)
Best free tool for creating captioned GIFs: GIPHY Slack Apphttps://slack.com/apps/A0F827J2C-giphy (I find myself going straight to Slack if I want to caption a GIF before sending. Since Slack is usually open on my desktop, I go to a discreet user/channel (like my @username, or @slackbot), use the GIPHY slash command (/giphy
), followed by the caption hashtag option (#caption
), the caption in quotes (""
) [author’s note: actually, double primes], followed by a search term or a link to a GIF. Open the resulting link, and use/save the resulting GIF.
Best free tool for capturing and creating stop-motion GIFs on your phone: Musemage (iPhone only) http://www.musemage.com/Gifstory (by Ultralab) - iOS - Android
Best free tool for drawing animated GIFs on your phone: Animatic (by Inkboard)https://animatic.io/ - iOS - Android - AmazonAnimator (by Photo Video Creative Labs)http://www.photovideocreativelabs.com/our-apps.html - iOS - Android
I didn't try them all, but I do use http://www.gifrocket.com/ occasionally. It's simple and easy to use. If I need to have more control about the GIF creation, I use Photoshop.
I use ezgif.com for all my gif stuff. Such a powerful tool. Love to have this as a stand alone app on my computer.
I used so many software for create animated GIF images but LiceCap is best one. LiceCap create best GIF images and quality is also very good. I got this software from this website and it is absolutely free, here is download link - http://www.fileopt.com/software/licecap
Thanks, @chino-wong that's pretty descriptive and bang on!
I built Gifmock, it's a simple desktop application that helps you create high quality GIFs from your mockups. You can also import a video and transform that into a GIF.
It comes with a Sketch plugin which makes creating GIFs as easy as exporting an artboard.

Let me know how you go! :)
Thanks a ton guys! I've used Licecap on my Windows device earlier and downloaded it for Mac too, but couldn't get it to work the same way. Just joined this community and your responses are overwhelming. Thanks once again :)
I always use this: https://gist.github.com/dergachev/4627207
https://gifox.io/ is the best but not free, after that I would say https://getkap.co/ (open source :D ). LiceCap is super outdated and lacks options

I tried a few some weeks ago and I agree with @Richard Bruskowski , gifrocket is the best I found.
