What is React Native? (React course for designers update 3)

Hey DN,

Finally it's time to post another update about the course here!

Here's the second installment of the series: What is React Native?.

For those who have seen an early draft, I've actually rewritten most of the post (see Backstage section for details)! I've also added a Hands-on section which should give you a first taste of React Native.

Eventually the course will be video-based. Posts like this would work as a textbook that you'd use to follow along. I'm also experimenting the style and language and trying my best to make it easy-to-understand yet informative.

    I'm definitely reading these, but some of the metaphors to dumb it down for me could possibly make things slightly more difficult to understand. Perhaps getting a little more literal in footnotes or something might help assist in future installments. Anyway, appreciate your efforts on this.

      Thanks Steven. Yup, that's exactly why I rewrote it. Which part do you still find hard to understand and in need of more literal description?

        The most confusing parts for me was the Virtual DOM, which I think is probably because of the metaphor. I don't fully understand the cape/magic dust metaphor either.

        I think, in general, I'm also very curious as to why React works so well, which is probably a little more meta. It seems such an obviously good concept that I'm sort of surprised it has taken this long to become a thing.

          Hmm. Have you got a chance to read the previous post What is React?. I tried to explain Virtual DOM there and why React works well.

          I agree the magic dust might be confusing because it doesn't really mean much. I just wanted to say that React was split into two parts, and the cloak is the only thing that can be "split" off from the superhero.

            Yup, I did. Granted, I'm no computer science major. I just remember reading through it a few times and feeling still pretty out to sea in parts. No worries, it's probably just me.

              I see. Is it possible to point out which parts you are still struggling with? I'll try my best to explain.

              Those posts are meant for people with no or little coding experience. If you are having difficulty in things, other people might have the same issue. I think it's important to address it before going further.
