Sketch 43.2 Duplicates Everything

Sketch had a problem with duplicating Symbols and I thought they fixed it with an update but it turns out this bug is still here. At least with my copy of Sketch. Not only that Sketch duplicates regular groups and layers like a maniac. I can barely work on my project.

Is this just me, or somebody else noticed this too?

I've found that this is specific to using identical symbols across multiple Sketch files. If you edit the symbol and try to paste it back in the original file it starts duplicating the symbol every time you paste it — even with all plugins disabled. I've documented and sent it to the Sketch team.

I've been able to reproduce the bug in the following ways:

    • If you are in an Auto Layout stack and want to duplicate a symbol, use Command+D. DO NOT copy/paste with Command+C …+V. This will result in a duplicate symbol in your Symbols page, and you’ll want to jump off a bridge.

    • This seems to duplicate symbols any time you copy-paste (Command+C …+V) a symbol from artboard to artboard.

I've had this problem for a while but it's been hard to reproduce (once wiped all sketch-related things off a laptop to get rid of it).

I found that Opt+Dragging didn't result in duplicates (while Cmd+C/V did).

I'm relatively new to sketch and I thought this was just how it was, I hope hey fix it.

I wonder if this is by design – potentially you might copy and paste a symbol instance with the same name and and same layer names, but with different appearance. You wouldn't want it overwriting the symbol that already exists.

I've had to find workarounds – if I'm copy and pasting an entire artboard to another document, I'll detach all symbols first, then replace each instance afterwards. Time consuming, but avoids the creation of duplicate symbols.

What I'd personally like to see is some kind of paste functionality that allows you to diff the incoming symbol instance against the existing one. It would behave as follows:

    • Keep existing symbol, map overridden properties, discard incoming symbol
    • Discard existing symbol, paste incoming symbol
    • Keep existing symbol, paste incoming symbol as new symbol

Symbol duplication is a file management disaster right now. I just try to work all in one file as much as absolutely possible. It's a mess.

I thought it was only me, this thing is driving me crazy! Hope they notice this asap and send a fix!

Same for me, wrote them support ticket, was told that they're aware of the issue. That was actually after I updated to 43.2 then hoped that it was fixed in next but no, still get duplicates

Have you tried disabling all your plugins? I've experienced issues in the past with poorly written plugins :/

Yup, I've been experiencing duplicate symbols. However, I didn't notice this was occurring as it was happening — I noticed all the duplicates in my file after designing for a day. Have you found a pattern? I'm not sure exactly which action is causing Sketch to duplicate symbols (copying and pasting a symbol in my design did not recreate the issue).

It is so random at my side that I can't find some logical pattern.

    I've been experiencing the same.

I can't confirm the duplication issue, but I have noticed a huge memory leak that will consistently crash my 2016 Macbook Pro w/ Touchbar. I have 16GB of RAM, yet Activity Monitor says I'm using 50GB+ http://oi66.tinypic.com/2ush1xl.jpg

Do you have FileVault enabled for your Mac? I noticed huge performance issues before I disabled it.

Hi, I had the same issue and traced it back to my craft plugin. Try disabling this and see if the leak goes. Once I updated to the latest version of Craft it was fine again.

Can you provide a screenshot, or an example of the issue? I am experiencing a similar issue with symbols, but not layers/groups.

Yeah, I'm having the same issues. Thought they'd fixed it but found lots of duplicates lately in a project. Very inconvenient.
