Spotify Testing Redesign

over 2 years ago from , Interaction Design Intern @ NASA JPL

Seems like Spotify is testing a new web player redesign, I couldn't find anything about this so I took some screenshots.

You can see them all here.

They can play around with new UI forever, they need to play with some functionality pieces:

Browse: • "You Might Also Like" and "New Releases" should have a not interested function

Social: • Sharing and threading comments about albums should be more natural • Commenting on specific albums or songs should be allowed—it is the best way to discover new music by following the comments to other profiles. • Friends should be less about seeing "what are they listening to right now" and more about "how similar are your profiles"

Mobile: • Stop telling me that I'm offline every fucking time I open the app. Wait a second and then check. • If I ever do open the app in Airplane mode, just show me my synced music. I don't need to see music that I can't play.

Apart from design, they also renewed front-end stack. Previous version was still using Flash and old javascript stack with bower packages. I'm not sure but they were also using Angular 1.x.

They moved to react and made player in HTML5 which they should have done so far :) It has better experience now, less bugs. I'm happier to use it now.

I was part of the beta test for the new web player and I really didnt like it at first - really bugged me that they removed a load of features like 'add to queue', the share a song feature and the 'remove from playlist' options for each song. I do really like the playlist grid view under 'your music'.

Hopefully this is a step towards allowing more user organisation and understanding of a "collection" using their interface. For all Spotify's content, you can do remarkably little with it, in my opinion. Star, save to playlist, or save to my music. My music becomes a gargantuan dump of music with little option to filter or organise this. I suppose this could be a considered move, trying to move customers away from "owning a collection" and more of a fluid entertainment service. Not sure the distribution of it, but I'm definitely in the camp of wanting to manage my own music collection.

    /end unrelated spotify rant

This redesign is much more better. I don't know why their desktop player is still different with this ugly sidebar on the left showing your facebook friends. Am I the only one finding that those rounds in the "Frank Sinatr" screenshot are too big ? :/ Actually I moved from Spotify to Groove music by Microsoft. How I wish their web player be as good as this one.

First impression: Spotify is playing it safe.

Thinking out loud here, but I wonder if we'll continue to see Spotify's bold design language of the last few years reined in.

Pandora Premium (Rdio reincarnated) is rolling out slowly. So far I'm loving the iOS app – waiting on the desktop. https://ww1.kissmangalist.com

Clarify: Spotify is testing a redesign of their web player, not desktop player?

I want to see them bring back a lighter option. It's all so dark all the time. Maybe even add a car mode with bigger simpler buttons.
