I find that using these mockups tend to take away focus from the actual UI design.

Very clean. I generally don't use these because I work mainly with enterprise tools, but I think this style is subdued enough where it can provide enough context for the medium that the design is intended, without distracting from the actual UI.

The Apple Watch one makes no sense. Desktop, phone, and tablet UIs are most of the time based on or build around the color white, which makes this mockup suitable to be used as a stylistic choice. The Apple Watch UI, however, is centered around the color black.
