Trying to find a nice contemporary blog theme and having a hard time finding a theme that looks good and is not bloated with unnecessary code/features.
Would be great if you guys could share some links to companies/studios/individuals that sell (or have free) quality WP themes.

underscores.me is the one that I recommend.
Clean and easy to customize.
When I start building themes, this is the template I use.
If you're new to building themes, I recommend building a child theme or two on top of TwentySixteen or other default themes first. https://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes
Thanks guys. I actually build my own themes quite often (usually using Bones as a starter framework), but am looking for a pre-made solution this time. I'll bookmark this one.

Wanted to say this ^ and ThemeBeans. Both are nowhere near bloated and the code is really great.

StudioPress makes some pretty nice ones on their Genesis framework: http://www.studiopress.com/
Keep in mind, it is a framework, so it's going to be more bloated than themes that do not have as many dependencies or child / parent relationships. All in all, I like these a lot and have used them for years. Performance has come a long way and they have a lot of very nice features.

I entered the world of PageBuilders. This means I bought the best PageBuilder around (Beaver Builder), bought the best compatible template for it (GeneratePress Premium) and a couple of module add-ons (PowerPack and Ultimate Addons) and now I can pretty much create 90% of the sites I used to design for someone else to develop. In a few hours... give it a try!

I've yet to find a pre built theme that is not bloated... maybe if we go back like 6 years. Nowadays, themes are swiss army knifes and can even do your laundry. For this reason, I always start with a modified version of underscores that I've built (stripped down and bootstrapped with my SCSS framework) and helper PHP functions I always use.
