2017 Goals

almost 7 years ago from , Product Designer

I love this time of year because it lends itself to thinking about the upcoming year and all the potential it has. I started compiling a list of goals I want to accomplish in 2017.

I thought it be interesting to see what everyone else's goals are. What are your personal goals? Career goals? Side hustle goals?

Your website looks great Lucian! :)

A random question just popped into my head though - and this is not some critique, just pure curiosity - why the waves in your logo and as your section footers? Is there some philosophy involved or is it just a random pattern that you chose?

I am carrying this portfolio design idea in my head for like two years now (which I have never worked on btw :/) - which involves waves or blue in general - and there is some philosophy involved, hence the curiosity. :)

After working in-house at an agency since 2009, I spent 6 months backpacking through Asia in 2016 and hope to start my own business in 2017.

Some immediate goals that come to mind:

    • Learn basic icon design to enhance my products
    • Read through Meng To’s Design+Code from start to finish to get a basic handle on iOS programming in Swift
    • Develop a custom Laravel application for PlayStation gamers in Australia/New Zealand

On top of that, I’m sure there will be countless other things to learn. For example, Vue.js is a framework I’d love to explore.

Goal for 2017....Stop thinking about time in terms of years. It's an arbitrary abstraction and a dangerous crutch.

Just get shit done, now. Stop looking for excuses to start something. Execute and learn from mistakes, now.

Basically, stop procrastinating. Time waits for no one and only results matter.

And if Shark Tank taught me anything, for every second I waste, someone else in the world is taking advantage of it. And if they are my competition, I am losing.

I actually started doing personal OKRs some time last year and I intend to continue. That way I can assign actual numbers to my goals and track them as year progresses. This year I have a bunch of things, including saving up some money to take a couple of months off and focus on my personal projects in 2018, shedding some more weight and writing more. I can highly recommend this.

    • Personal: Win more bike races with my team!
    • Career: Redesign and standardize front end framework for MainEvent so our engineers can bang out new things without breaking the UI/UX.
    • Side Hustle: Launch (1/1/17!) and continue to add new interviews to Skate or Bike.

    1. I started a side project a few months back, but took a break for the holidays. I want to get that going again and grow it this year.

    2. My company (small studio) is looking to grow by a few more folks this year.

    3. Get out of the office more/get a more stable work schedule. I've been saying this for awhile, but I'd like for this year to be the year I actually do more than just work all the time.

I would like to learn some java and get some certifications I've been delaying for ages.

Few weeks ago I wrote my first design related article and I enjoyed it very much so I'd like to keep writing and improving my writing skills along the way.
