This is really cool. Who/what is responsible for this?

Thanks Steven! A buddy and I have been building this on our spare time for the past 8 months. We welcome any feature recommendations and will do our best to add it in future releases.

It's pretty damn accurate from what I can gather. The same ten or twenty GREAT films I've never seen that keep haunting me for all time.

Three months ago, we asked for your help at the infancy of this project and got some constructive feedback. Per your suggestion, we refined the algorithm and added recommendations for:

    • Streaming on Netflix
    • What to watch with another friend
    • By Era/Genre/Actor/Director/Writer

We’re now officially showing this on DN, please share and let us know what features you want added.

Hi John, I quickly tried (don't remember tried the previous version) :

I'd like to have a neutral choice for the movies I've seen but don't really remember if I'd like or not ...

Otherwise, it seem to be accurate and the UI is nice, congrats and good job for doing something you can try without register!

This is great John. The Netflix region select is spot on. I'm from the Netherlands and there is no single site / service with this kind of functionality. Just one thing: It would be nice to favorite / save a movie on the index page on hover.

Great point. We will probably add a little star on hover for each poster.

Because the "recommendations" tab basically becomes a watchlist once you've rated everything you've seen...so we're still debating how prominent to make the Favorite/Watchlist feature....what are your thoughts on that?

I'd like to be able to "save" movies on hover, if that's what you're describing above. Basically make it easier to make a watchlist. From what I can tell right now, I have to click into the description of a movie to be able to save it.

Edit: Scratch that, I now see the save star icon in the corner when quick-rating. But it would still be good to have it on hover in the grid list of movies :)

    Amazing!

This seems remarkably accurate! If I'd have one suggestion it would be the ability to sync my 'saved' list with another service's list (in my case Trakt).

Yes, that's a great add. Trakt, obvsly IMDB, and I've also heard Letterboxd. Anything else?

+1 for Letterboxd. I have added nearly every movie I have seen to that with star based ratings. If you could pull from that data, that would be fantastic.

    This is pretty great!

I ❤️ movies so I've seen most of what it's recommending me (so far), but they're all movies which I love so it's doing it right.

Be cool if Letterboxd had an on-boarding process similar to this.

This is amazing! I don't know what the backend for this is and how it is making those choices / optimising, but the algorithm seems to work well for me! Constructive comment: I'd like to be able to go back to a movie and change my rating. I did remember that I watched a movie after I clicked on "didn't watch it". Also, for some I remembered that they were awful after I clicked on "good". So yeah, in a nutshell, a way to resurface the decisions already done would be cool :)

I've been using this on and off for a few months now. When you want to find a good movie to watch, it really does that job well for you. All the movies I've marked as "I've seen it" (I think that was the button text...) are excluded from view.

Very handy. I wonder could it be monetized with iTunes affiliate links or something...

In any case, that's a super cool project. Nice work.

Gosh, sorry what a long time. Yes, sorry, we only have Facebook because it's much easier to implement, we'll definitely add email and twitter soon!

Cool, finally a humanized recommendation movie product.

-Would love an option like "Not interested", for example, I hate scifi, so I don't watch this movies and doesn't necessarily mean that they are bad. -Search tags by actors / directos would be really useful -Rotten Tomatoes / Metacritic rating on movie profile page would be useful

Yup, good point. I was thinking the same. If you're into movies, a suggestion/referal system like taste.io is fantastic. However, those same people also know what they don't like. If you can give the system a cue to learn the kind of stuff you want to avoid rating it would be super helpful.

Amazing work, as someone already said the onboarding was great. Really really impressed, I'll definitely be using this.

Really cool product. I worked on something very similar (but not nearly as good) many years ago.

One suggestion: in the 'top matches' section, once you have rated (or hidden) items, it would be better if they were immediately replaced with new recommendations rather than just staying there with a 'rated'/'hidden' label over them. Otherwise you have to refresh the page to get new recommendations.

Edit: just noticed the 'Updated matches' button. Still would be better if this wasn't necessary, unless it is for a technical reason.

Looks really cool and good recommendations. But I think it's too aggressive with the registration process. :(

Hi Perttu, which part of the registration process are you referring to specifically? We'll try to improve it.

      • Perttu Talasniemi, 1 year ago

The part where I just want to rate movies to improve my recommendations but it keeps bugging me to Save (register) and I don't want to do that in this point. I would like to explore more to decide do I want to register or not.

Can you guys also state the source of the recommendation?

Sample: We've recommended Trumbo (2015)* since you liked this and that.*

This will help me to prioritize between recommendations.

    0 points

Hello Ahmet, the source of recommendation is pretty complicated but it mostly comes from people with very similar taste to you. So it's not exactly based on any specific other movie you rated high/low.

request to undo my rating in the onboarding process and later change movie ratings afterwards as well please! also ability to search and rate a movie as well? and add it if it doesnt exist.

    awesome project.

This is amazing! Thanks for making this! One thing that would be great is "related movies" or "movies you may also like" based on one movie in particular.

To put you in context, I watched Wild Tales last weekend and since I saw it i'm searching for other movies like this one...

    • Could you guys email me what I should watch on the weekend? Preferably on Friday, early in the day, so I see it, and have something to look forward to. (Or for us bingers - once a day?)
    • When are you doing this for music?

Love this! I loved rating movies on Netflix, and their little known 'friends' feature was awesome (before facebook, when you could just peek on your friend's queue, and review movies for friends to see, back when the queue was a thing). I've always wanted a product that supported the social aspect of watching movies, this is awesome!
