That new Google Assistant logo

Watched the launch of the Google Pixel phone yesterday and couldn't help but notice that new Google Assistant logo/icon.

I'm... just really not digging it. It reminded me of when you try out a new drawing app for the first time and just point and drag random circles all over the canvas. And the circles were just there, supposedly in place of a user avatar (is that how an AI assistant is supposed to look like?), all static and unexpectedly unlively.

I actually quite like it (borderless, on white, not as a circled avatar). And I guess it should be an abstract version of ‘Gg®’°, or just ‘Gg’° with an ‘ear·y’ double–storey ‘g’.
(°As in G[oo]g[le]. ;)
*Addendum: The Google Design team [https://design.google.com/articles/evolving-the-google-identity/] obviously also (quite heavily if I may say so) drew inspiration for its 2015 [!] abstract dots/circles logo version/variation off of the 2009 [!] ‘Google Circle Logo’ [http://pleaseenjoy.com/projects/personal/google-circle-logo/], by Ji Lee.

  I designed the original version of this mark about 3 years ago while at Google. This is all fairly correct.

I think it could work really beautifully if it was a bit more animated, like you mentioned. I think Google has yet to find the balance between a messenger and a bot as two different but related things; probably why the logo icon is the same as any other contact's.
