Ask DN: Favorite design manager

almost 4 years ago from , Product Designer, formerly Uber, Amazon, Automatic...

Who have been your favorite design managers and why? What made working for them so special?

Clarification: "Design manager" is a person you report to who's responsible for helping you succeed in your role as a designer at your current company. Think creative director, design director, head of design, design manager, etc.

He was my design manager when I worked at Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians. He taught me a great deal about project management, account servicing, and had a great critique process that helped me think more analytically and more encompassing. He was very encouraging in my continued education in web development. I'm incredibly lucky to have been able to work for him.

I'm a design manager and have a difficult time finding others in my position to learn from or look to as an example and I think it's because it's a relatively rare title. I don't think though, that it's a rare position, just an unusual name for a common position.

I'd really love to discover good design managers from this thread.

Interesting. I've been pretty surprised by the reaction to the job title. Maybe that's because this is an agency heavy audience? In tech, especially for product and UX design at a medium–large company, most folks report to a design manager; I've also seen them report to a design director, head of design, or product director. I rarely come across creative directors in tech, and usually when I do, it's a warning sign that the company could be behind the curve— again, with respect to design in tech.

For me it was my first Creative Director. He taught me how to think outside the box and forced me to keep my pixels perfect. He also brings me to client meeting and it's there that I learn that you have to be both a good producer and a good seller.

-old- Maybe my answer will be irrelevant. Could you be more specific ? I think you meant a design director, or a mentor. So a real person and not a software.-old-
