Ask DN : What are freelance designers biggest struggles ?

almost 4 years ago from , Designer

Hello fellow designers,

I'm writing a piece of content about today's state of freelance design. I need to dive into specifics concerning clients work, rates, productivity, feedback handling. it'd be great to have freelance designers insight on this topic.

From what I've experienced and heard form other freelancers:

    First Year

    • Getting clients
    • Getting good projects
    • Learning how the business side of things works

    Next Few Years

    • Getting quality clients
    • Raising prices
    • Finding and Managing subcontractors
    • Figuring out the next step
    • Creating a product

    These are some -

    • Asking a prospect lead their budget. Always a pain.
    • Negotiating an hourly rate for flat-work quotes and vice versa.
    • Working with clients (with remote dev collabs) in different timezones.
    • Discussing proposals (and negotiating) with non-decision-making people.

Taxes. They don't make it easy out there to set up a business and pay taxes. The design side of things is perfectly fine.
