Ask DN: Examples of Take-Home Design Assignments?

almost 5 years ago from , UX Designer. Writer & Publisher @ UXBeginner.com

Hey DN,

What type of take-home assignments have you received in an interview process? Here are some that my friends and I have seen...

  • Redesign a sign-up userflow of X App
  • How would you design X Product for X Audience? (E.g. "Alarm clock for the elderly")
  • Reimagine how an e-commerce store can upsell items without disrupting the user's checkout flow

Had an interesting one? Let's share :)

IMHO, take-home assignments are a poor choice for assessing a candidate's design abilities. Real design is collaborative, user-focused and iterative.

Take-home assignments are the exact opposite. Design in a box. Without user input. Get it "right" the first time. Perhaps even worse, because the candidate is forced to guess what the "correct" solution is in the mind of the assignor.
