Hey Samuel, thanks for the great work you do in your tear downs.

I'd like to get your thoughts on the "Guided Tours" like Zendesk had you do several times. We've tried this technique multiple times and watched it crash and burn.

We're now moving toward what we're calling "contextual tips," or small tips that appear when you do certain actions (ex: clicking twice on something that should be dragged).

Have you ever seen a guided tour that was successful? What makes the difference between a good and bad tour? How do you push something into someone's workflow that they need but haven't discovered yet?

I'm painting with a broad brush here, but I'd appreciate any thoughts. Thanks!

        Hi Taylor -

In general, I'm not a gigantic fan of guided tours for the same reason you aren't. They're interruptive and instructive rather than persistent and action-guiding.

I vastly prefer progression systems wherein you point out recommended actions rather than parts of the interface. In Zendesk's case, they kind of combined the two, and I think it works best when it's more of the former and less of the latter.
