Ask DN: What's your equipment setup?

over 3 years ago from , Design @ Nested.com

I am about to leave my job in the corporate world and begin life in the land of startups. Therefore it's time for an equipment refresh, what's your choice and why?

Personal budget is £2000.

I get the best machine I can afford. It's more up-front cost, but I tend to get 4-5 years out of a machine no problem that way. My late-2010 iMac is finally getting a bit long in the tooth, but the only reason it's still rocking it today is because I invested in the fastest i7 chip and put extra RAM in it. For an extra ~$400, it probably got me an extra 1-2 years of longevity.

I would prioritize processor first, and then add RAM from OWC or similar. RAM you can upgrade later, a processor you can't. In fact, if getting an iMac, I would strongly advise getting only the base amount of RAM and getting the rest elsewhere. It's significantly cheaper (example, for the $200 cost to upgrade from 8GB to 16GB of RAM on the Apple site, you could have a total of 32GB for the same $200.
