Correction: If user doesn't have Gravatar, then they generate Identicons. Love the idea. Definitely better than using generic silhouettes.
I like that its not generic silhouettes but I don't really love these icons either… 37Signals did this really well, I wish they would have given this the attention it deserves.
Ah, good that you remembered what 37Signals did. Yes, their version is definitely more artistic. The think I like about Identicons is that they're generated and in a sense, they're unique.

Yeah, I agree its definitely a step up. I just think github has the ability to do something with more personality which I think Identicons is still missing. Thanks for adding the link, I should have did that.
Also, LayerVault did a great job with this also. http://vimeo.com/user7743505/review/47147025/3c9041f696
In the dystopian future, all knowledge workers are required to sport an RFID tattoo of their GitCorp Identicon. Non-compliance results in deletion of your mind-repository.
Very cool. Not quite as cool as Layervault's kaleidoscope IMO, but very cool nonetheless. I love little details like this.
