Ask DN: Has anyone used an external USB monitor as a second monitor for your laptop?

almost 5 years ago from , @pg

Any thoughts, recommendations?

I'm currently on a 13" MacBook Pro, and whenever I'm traveling I feel the need for a second monitor. I mean, when I'm staying for a while somewhere where I don't have access to a normal monitor. I've seen that ASUS has some that are 1920x1080, but from what I've read online, almost all of them have a bit of lag because they're connected just by USB.

Would appreciate any help with this. Thanks!

What about something like Duet Display if you have an iPad? There's another one that I have in mind, but can't think of the name. Will update if I remember...

Update: iDisplay seems to be a free version of Duet Display.

But the one I was thinking of was Astropad. That way you can use your iPad as a tablet if needs be as well.

This is all depending on if you have an iPad/iPhone like I said. If not, I'm sure there are android alternatives. Also, I've never used any of these so wouldn't be able to comment on which is best.

Thanks for the suggestions! I knew about Duet Display but I haven't tried it yet. I wonder how useful it is if you don't have the latest iPad, the large one.
