Figma Beta - Best cloud-based design tool yet?

almost 7 years ago from

Just got access to the Figma beta today. Quite impressed by how well it performs! I'd even go as far to say that it is the best cloud-based design tool I've used.

Sketch file import was awesome after you actually get your Sketch file up and running. Preserved all of my layers/masks/groups perfectly.

I don't however foresee a move from Sketch anytime soon. It's tough to beat the myriad of Sketch plugins that have become intrinsic to our daily workflows. That said, one of the big upsides of Figma is team collaboration. We're currently having some issues working simultaneously on Sketch files.

Who else out there has given Figma a go? What are your first impressions?

My concern would be the browser based nature. What happens if I lose internet? What if I'm traveling and have a couple of hours sans internet? I'm excited to try it but like most others have some reservations.

I think Mariusz meant, can you invite other people now that you're in the beta (specifically him :D). And I'd love an invite too if it's an open invite system!

Ah - thanks for the translation Chris. Right now it seems like you have to be a part of my Slack team to get an invite. I'll see if I can find another way.

Try asking them on twitter, worked form me ;)

As for the tool itself I was very impressed and am looking forward to farther improvements.

The team behind the product is very responsive and helpful and it seems they appreciate feedback, also you can see that Figma is getting better on regular basis.

Atm for me the dealbreaker is lack of any kind of reusable symbols/styles (unless I missed something) but I certainly hope they will implement such functionality soon.

As for skecth import - it does work fine, although when I've thrown at them the file with dozen pages and way over hundred artboards I had some strange bugs (stretched photos, font problems), but to be fair, the file was a mess. No problems with smaller and cleaner ones.

Ohh, and I tend to use Figma for low fi wires right now, didn't have a chance to do "heavier" stuff yet.

Would I switch from Photoshop/Sketch? Nope, not yet at least. But this is the one tool in this wave of design software that I'm actually actively following.

The font rendering isn't very pretty.

Figma is incredible. Have been using it in production to build apps, FB ads, and creative work at Circle.

I've been messing around with Figma for icon creation (dat vector tool). The rest of my workflow is in Sketch (and most likely for the foreseeable future).
