Has anyone come across articles on the use or over use of icons within the context of enterprise software. More specifically have there been studies on the limits of user comprehension when it comes to icons, ie is there such a thing as two many icons communicating various abstract ideas and tools?

The Icon Book by Wiley is still so good.
Rule of thumb here: if you're going to come up with your own icons, make sure to do a quick round of user testing with your target audience. I can't count the number of times an icon we thought to be perfect was misinterpreted. Also, don't be afraid of labels.
