I prefer Comet over Experience Design CC
Especially because everyone will end up calling "Experience Design CC" "Ed" for short.
The icon says "Xd", so hopefully it won't be Ed. Or we all collectively stick with Comet!!!11
The icon was "Ct" before.
I agree, it sounded better, but I can understand why they went with that name, to appeal quickly to the tools person.
Then they might as well call it ‘xD’.
Todays top questions
- How do you insert an image
- Why can't you align a repeated grid
- Where are all the tools in this minimalistic wetdream
To add an image you can drag an image file onto the canvas, use File > Import, or paste an image from the clipboard.
We'd love to hear your feedback on what you want to do with Repeat Grid and what other functionality you need that's missing. Feel free to post stuff on Adobe XD's UserVoice site - we're listening.
I get it's still an early preview, but how has it got this far without a proper colour picker or layers panel? Seriously if there's a reason tell me :)
We need layers!
yeah seriously, without the layer panel I am handicapped..
Yep, hard to believe. That was my first feature request/bug report. A fix is coming apparently!?
You can use Skala Color with it, I'd call that a huge plus.
Even though I haven't unveiled the full potential of it yet, my first impression was that Sketch and InVision had an accident an this is the result.
looks like its just a beta version.. its no-where near sketch (just my opinion) pls do not start an argument..
Because it has not been said enough yet, THIS IS A PREVIEW RELEASE. This means it's an early beat and is missing functionality. On purpose. Because it's still in development. It does show a lot of promise and will open the field of UI/UX design to people who don't cream their pants every time an article about Sketch is posted to DN.
54 Mb for demo file. Slow clap.
I was prepared to wait all this morning for it to install.
it's still 99% for me.. since last 6 hours
Oh, I downloaded it in like 3 mins :(
Lamest name ever...
It's not a version 1.0 yet. Just an early preview
I spent a few minutes playing with Xd this morning. Here's my initial impression.
- This app is fast! Fast and buttery smooth. Not sure how well it'll handle highly complex files, but I have a good feeling.
- The spartan interface is a welcome change from Adobe's usual fare.
- It's definitely not done yet. There's all sorts of functionality I hope they add before the production release.
- Being able to prototype right from my design files is awesome!
Can't wait to see what they do with it. In the meantime my daily driver will still be Sketch though.
Gave it a go and there's definite potential here. Very crude so far, but potential for sure. As for the name, Comet always felt like it had too much peresonality for an Adobe product so it was bound to change, but "Adobe Experience Design CC" ..? Jeez. :)
Completely agree. I was in the beta test group, and came away with the following thoughts on the kind of workflow I hope this brings:
Photoshop and Illustrator: - Create mockups on artboards, with assets saved as smart objects and CC library items. - Export all of this to XD
Experience Designer: - Work with imported artboards, shared assets, etc. - Refine designs, build prototypes and preview them.
Design sync between applications: - Designs created in Ps and Ai should be able to be updated if edited in Xd. For example, let's say a UX architect has created low-fidelity designs in Xd to show basic interactivity. A visual designer should be able to take that document into Ps or Ai, and pick up right where the UXA left it - replacing low-fidelity imagery with high-fidelity imagery meant to be final design. Then, as that syncs with Xd, the prototype should update to reflect updated designs.
If they can do this, that's where this becomes a very powerful workflow. For large teams on CC who are not going to just up and switch everyone to Sketch / Invision, this could be fantastic.
What? Why is it unavailable via Adobe Creative Cloud desktop app?
Downloading it outside of the regular CC download process is just silly.
I am not even able to download it. It constantly keeps me taking to the CC app and does nothing.
I can now download it via Creative Cloud - let's see how it goes…
same here — in France. It's just not on the CC app list... :(
Strange, it's been available for me (in France) since early this morning.
The initial preview is Mac and English. I am guessing you are not seeing it in the CC app because your language is set to French?
If you go into the CC App settings, and set your language to English (may need to restart CC app), does XD then show up?
More language support is on its way, and we are working on windows support.
It is pretty fast, and seems quite stable (performance-wise) so there's that. The missing features is just a matter of time. I'm quite confident it will be good :)
Are there rulers somewhere? I can't find them!
This is nowhere near Sketch...hopefully this is a really early preview....
It might take several years before this becomes a serious tool, but considering the direction it is taking, it already feels better than Sketch (consider the way you start a project in Sketch New Document > Tools > Artboard > select from a dull list of templates, with the way you do it in Comet where you just pick what you want from that awesome start screen).
I appreciate the effort Adobe has put into the project to address the evolving needs of interface designers, albeit quite late. This is a radical step for Adobe for sure. Not utilizing the existing cross-platform frameworks and conventions from existing CC apps is a huge departure.
It's buttery smooth, granted there isn't much there yet. If it weren't I'd say that Adobe should abort the project. It's hard to make judgments about it yet because so many core features aren't there. While it's easy to imagine what Gradient Fills or Symbols might do, it takes a little more work to imagine how they'll be implemented into the framework there.
I'm a little puzzled by how light this preview release is. The videos last year that came out showing off Comet seemed as if they were way further ahead than this. What's the deal Adobe? When will a real feature filled version be shared?
Potentially huge workflow changer for people working on Adobe CC and we're talking about what they decided to name it.
Sketch was the only Mac-only thing that I really cared about, and now this too :( (I'm on a PC)
A Windows version is coming later this year -- we're just focusing on one platform initially so we can iterate faster.
Makes perfect sense; I just wish I could try it out. Good luck!
I'm liking it so far and I haven't found I've missed the layers panel yet. All the Sketch keyboard short cuts are working, so I can still group objects and ungroup. Having said that I haven't built anything complex yet. The repeat grid thing is pretty slick and the prototyping feature is convenient. I'm quite interested in this longer term!
Really? I can get no good shortcuts to work (grouping/ungrouping not including... as they should be standard in most tools like this). I was annoyed I could not change the size of a shape from my keyboard, or quickly just to the shapes options like in sketch (alt+shift).
Not bad, not bad. Like the fact that you can do basic prototyping in it also.
Played around with it a bit. Definitely seems like the product of Sketch and Invision having a night of drinking and debauchery.
Some things it still needs: Layers, Rulers, Color Picker, Zoom Tool, Guides, More control over the Repeat Grid, Image insertion
So is this supposed to be like Sketch but with the added ability of being able to prototype and "hand it off" to a device to view it on there?
Comet is a very nice, smooth working tool, BUT as i sad about 147853quadrillion times, it needs LAYERS... and RULERS... and a COLORPICKER... GRIDS... and so one. I can't understand how the assumed we wouldn't need these functions. holy banana.
i do not want to use 15 different apps to get the design done. so i still use sketch (though it has so many little dirty damn bugs).
i hope the app grows quickly. we'll see what happens. .
They're trying to simplify as much as possible, and find new(ish!) ways to do things, like the Repeat Grid, and auto-text styles.
I hope they're able to resist the clamour for traditional 'must haves' like Layers – and the 'busy work' they often cause. It'll be a hard balancing act, but if they can avoid too much baggage this could be a very lightweight, highly productive app.
I'm lovin' it. shrug
Let battle commence.
Shame there's no PC version yet.
no hover state..... again :( Can anything possibly make desktop app prototype without hover state?
Flinto for Mac 1.4 was recently released with support for desktop interactions, including hover.
Principle also gained hovers recently.
I know this is just a preview, but is the "prototyping" just screen to screen clickthroughs? So far this is a nice piece of software, but nothing going on to make me switch to it. Let us see what the next version is like!
only for mac?! I mean come on, you were supposed to be an alternative for slack for us windows users (i know it will evidently be available for pc, but just dissapointed that it isn't for now)
Alternative for Sketch...
"We’ve heard loud and clear that you want us to bring Project Comet to Windows as soon as possible. We want to retain our focus on the public beta for Mac OS for now, but plan on accelerating our efforts for Windows in 2016. We’ll keep you posted on our progress."
This is a decision that baffled me when they first announced Project Comet. I work with a lot of designers who use Windows, and we can't use Sketch because they can't install it on their PCs. Adobe had a huge opportunity here to support both platforms right from the start. They need to support Windows as soon as possible.
Just tried it, it seems like the 'Zoom' tool is missing. I could really use that :-) Looking forward into the updates, there's a lot of potential here.
alt + mouse scroll
Thanks. I wish there was a tool for it though
You also have the input on the top-right part of the screen!
Yep, but there are no gradients? Only a fill function.
No gradients for us yet.
Downloading it. Just not quite like the pink icon.
Dude, you're not supposed to share this news yet.
Haven't received this info. Just saw a link to the site on my facebook feed.
Thanks for all the feedback here.
Would you mind adding these feature requests to Adobe XD UserVoice ? That way you could be informed when the features land.
It's important to highlight that this first Public Preview is a solid foundation for new features to arrive with our monthly releases moving forward. This is just the beginning of a long and fun journey.
We will be answering more questions tomorrow here on Designer News. Feel free to send your question there as well.
Thanks for helping us shape the future of Adobe XD.
