Ask DN: How much do you charge as a contractor?

almost 4 years ago from , Product Designer @ SoundHound

I will be joining a large tech company soon as a contractor, and would love to get an idea of what others are charging so I have something to go off of...I haven't been able to find too much valuable information about current market rates.

For those of you who do contract work, what is your hourly rate? It would be great if you could post your location and how many years of experience you have as well.

Depends on where you are definitely.

I'm based in Toronto, Ontario with 6-7 years of experience as a product designer, currently freelance/contract designer.

    Current rate is $60/hr

The average industry rate for developers at large technology companies(last I checked) was $995 per day. So, if your placement company takes say 30%, you will be making about $85 per hour. I have no idea what the rate is for designers, but should be similar. We paid design contractors about $140 per hour on my last project. This was in Upstate, New York. Very low cost of living.
