I've been thinking of making a website that curates specifically Designer News Meetups. Making it easy for people in cities like Portland, New York, London, etc Do y'all think it'd be useful?

Always? I think business-related things tend to wind down during the summer, so that might get the fewest people too busy to attend. As far as I know, meetup events happen pretty consistently throughout the year.

If you're really serious about it, you should look into using OCAD's (Ontario College of Art and Design) space. It's a really nice building and is in central downtown Toronto, plus I'm sure they'd love to host you.
