      Agreed. That horizontal scrolling feels really counterintuitive; I was expecting to move left when I scrolled down.

        Are you using a trackpad with "natural scroll"? That might be it. Other than that, the keyboard navigation did it for me!

    Because the background is pure white and the middle bar is also pure white, the metaphor of them being book covers wasn't immediately apparent to me. I thought they were just two "cards" with the white banner separating them.

      I had the exact same issue. I think this is also reinforced by the horizontal navigation. Perhaps a stronger drop shadow or a more naturalistic cover rendering would help reinforce the cover as a single solid unit.
