Show DN: Minimal Portfolio Design

over 3 years ago from , Designer - Quilor.com

I recently launched my personal portfolio website and was very much inspired by minimalism. I'm also available for hire.

http://quilor.com

It's a static site. It'd be great if anyone had any feedback.

I like the design, and I agree with Luke, I like that having no navigation makes it a very linear journey.

but I find it hard to separate the different projects. There's no clear division between them. Some fit entirely in one "block" of white/colour, some spill over into two.

Also, I find it tacky that you copied the terminal design. I mean, it's good that you gave credit at least, but I would really come up with something at least half-original, even if you take some influence, especially since this is the last thing I see on the page.

If you just directly copy someone else's work for your own website, I worry that you'd do the same for me if I were your client.

Thanks for your feedback Morgan, I agree with your point on terminal design. Kalyn Nakano did a superb job, I will definitely do my own version. Copying someone's work like for like on a commercial project won't happen. Only on my personal projects.

I'm not saying that you would copy someone's work on a commercial project, but if I was looking to hire you as a designer, knowing that you've straight-up copied another designer doesn't fill me with encouragement.

This website is meant to sell you to clients, and copying others isn't a good way to sell yourself.

Hi Morgan, I removed the terminal design, sincere apologies. Designernews is an awesome community. Thanks again for taking the time to give feedback, I appreciate it.

Neat font! But not sure what you mean by 'minimal'? It's visually quite 'busy' IMO (nothing wrong with that though)

Anyway, I'm experiencing some css columns problems in Safari 8.0.8, just FYI: https://db.tt/2AUdWlBN

It's so damn beautiful, inspired me a lot!

    3 Things I loved

    • The way you styled anchor links (genius!).

    • The font, the font & the font.

    • The gradients.

    3 Things I didn't like

    • The long video is the first thing you see, which I think might make a lot of people close the page, I know it's important to you but maybe you can move a bit after your portfolio?

    • Like the other guys said, the navigation is quiet important here.

    • Small font size. I know I sound like a grandpa, but if you want people to read make it easy for them.

After all, congrats man, you've got an amazing portfolio. Inspired me to do a lot of things.

    Cheers.

Wow, thanks Mahdi, I'm grateful for any feedback.

Good: 1. The real genius is my friend: http://andyshaw.me/ 2. Type: https://www.typewolf.com/ 3. Gradients: http://uigradients.com/

Bad: 1. The long video has me in two minds, do I show the work first (more important) or introduce myself in a long video. I will probably put the video at the end, I don't want to bore everyone :) 2. Small font size, agree. Using this http://www.modularscale.com/ I shall keep on tinkering

Whoa! Thanks a lot Roy for the links.

Yeah I know that you're presenting in the video, I've watched most of it and I like it, but still it's a bit long, new users needs to invest 30 minutes of their time to get to know you while I think your awesome work could do that in seconds.

Keep doing cool stuff man, and keep inspiring everyone.

        Cheers,

Cheers Mahdi, I will move the video to the bottom (don't wanna scare away people) Work should be a priority

    Hi Royβ€”

If the chapter links don't work until the video is played, I'd suggest revealing them after the user has pressed play.

Absolutely love the design of all of this. I like the fact that there is no navigation bar, so it encourages you to scroll and read the page as you intended. Great work!

Thanks Luke, it feels like scroll heaven, which could be bad too. Hopefully there's not too much content
