Ask DN: Who remembers May 1 Reboot?

5 years ago from , Co-founder, Plain

The May 1 Reboot was an annual web site redesign event. It went on from the year 2000 through 2007. The last time they updated the site was 2008.

You have to hack the URL to see the pages: http://www.may1reboot.com/2008/

If you just go to the main domain you'll get an error message.

Who remembers these events and who took part?

I think about this often! Also brings to mind Chapter3 (and the rest of the hyperisland folks), bubblebathgirl, weworkforthem, gmunk, k10k, 2advanced, etc...my design idols of the time. I'd love to see this concept make a comeback. Crazy nostalgia, thanks for the link!

That's cute, but this is the OG May 1 Reboot, let's see if you remember it: https://web.archive.org/web/20010602174117/http://www.threeoh.com/may1/

Heh, I not only remember it, but when web standards were becoming a thing (around 2005) I created CSS Reboot to provide a Flash-alternative.

2007 was the final year I ran CSS Reboot and there were around 1,000 participants if I remember correctly. Fun times!

I'm pretty sure they were relevant after 2008, and that their website wasn't Flash. I can't remember when I participated for the last time, though.

Good times, thanks for the trip down the memory lane. :)

I thought I remembered it existing after 2008 too but I do not see that reflected online. Maybe it is because I'm getting older and time is moving faster.

I've actually talked to James about starting it up again. We've tried a couple of times but never found a developer who could help out creating the site. It could happen if people helped out.

But it seems the most of us are too busy at our agencies/freelancing to do it.

Pixel fonts... only sharp at even pixel sizes and when placed on even x/y values in Flash.

    Fun times (c:

Yeah that was a good one - so much experimental design going on those days with folks like Mike Young, Mike Cina, Joshua Davis, etc. - missing it.
