Looking for a Host for the Designer News Podcast

over 5 years ago from , sometimes Maxwell

Hey DN! We’re exploring the idea of a weekly podcast series aimed at: discussing DN’s top stories, timely interviews with designers, insights into companies/products, and more.

If you are a podcast host or podcast producer with previous experience and would like to get involved, send me an email! - max@designernews.co.

  • Please include any relevant details and links re: previous experience

If you are a potential sponsor that would like to know a bit more about how you could get involved, send me an email as well! - max@designernews.co.

Last, but not least, if you have host recommendations, ideas on who you’d like to hear from, or any general thoughts/feedback, post in the comments!

Thanks everybody.

Would love to be involved in this but have no experience in this whole podcast thing :D But if you need help with anything send me an email dedobbelaereian@gmail.com

Also i think it would be a great idea if you had a very diverse host "panel" like 3 people from different branches in the design community and different "skill levels" so the discussions aren't going to be one big group of circle jerks :D

I love podcasts, but please please please avoid skype interviews. sound quality is important. And skype or phone quality is terrible.

This is probably a long shot but lets not have super long podcasts, please? :3

Knowing a lot of podcast listeners have multiple podcasts in their queue, we want to be wary of time for sure.

      • What's your ideal time length?

I think for a highly produced segment podcast like, say, Slack Variety Pack, 30-45min is the sweet spot.

I personally don't mind longer (1-2hr) podcast, but the host has to be really good at conducting an interview or discussing whatever topic.

My favourite podcast is 99% Invisible and that's usually between 15-25 minutes; although it's technically more a radio show how it's produced but it's concise and always on topic, which personally I find important.

I'd say 20-25 minutes is the sweet spot.

I would say the sweet spot for the shorter segment variety is 25-30 minutes and interview and discussion format to be 1hr. The average commute is approximately 25 minutes which makes it easy to listen to an entire episode during that trip. Or for the 1hr format allow listeners to divide the episode into two listening sessions. Hopefully cutting down on those awkward times where your commute is over but you have <10 minutes left in your podcast.

Please make this happen! If its anything like Design Details I'll have twice as many pure design related Podcasts to listen to every week :)

It would be interesting, to maybe go into more details specific to the design community and the people commenting, posting links, etc.

I don't think we need yet another design related podcast, that just ends up being some people giving their highly subjective opinion while desperately trying to be objective. Panels, diverse hosts, meta-discussions would be great. Make something new.

This sounds like a great idea. I think it would be interesting to hear from people in the DN community as well as bigger names in the industry.

I think if bigger names in the industry are involved the podcast would have to avoid the same old 'tell me your story/how did you get to where you are' conversations that have been covered a million times before. It would be great to have a podcast with discussions around topics rather than biographies, in my opinion.

I was one of the hosts of another podcast, Talking Drupal (http://talkingdrupal.com) for about a year and a half. I'd love to be involved! (I'll email you with more info - I also work with CTodd at Fresh Tilled Soil)
