Since I purchased Sketch 3 back in April of 2014 for $49, I've spent $1,100 on my Adobe software subscription. I just want to say thank you to Bohemian Coding for making such a stellar product at such an affordable price.

Most definitely seconded. I actually exclusively use Sketch, no Adobe software at all. I have a couple workarounds for non-Sketch functions but I almost never need them.

Well, Adobe subscription packs a lot of different software for 49, not just one, so how can you compare them? ;)

Because you need both Illustrator and Photoshop if you want something similar to the Sketch experience. And even if you only need those two, you still pay a lot more.

I was part of the unlucky crowed who bought Sketch 2.4 for $70 about three months before 3.0 came out. 2.4 was pretty buggy, but I assumed they would fix the bugs. After the release of 3.0, though, they cut all upgrade paths, essentially ensuring that nothing would ever be fixed. I even contacted them via Twitter, and was given an incredibly dismissive reply about how Sketch 2.4 had hundreds of "new" features and that I should be grateful.

Adobe may be worse, but I still feel Bohemian Coding is a bunch of crooks for pulling that kind of thing, and I will never give them any money again.

I must be the only one not experiencing these bugs.

Nah, I'm good, too. I keep multiple files open (5+) and each one has about 6-7 artboards inside and I'm not experiencing any more or less sluggishness than usual.

Sometimes I wonder if it's Adobe employees posting these instant bug crashes. We use Sketch on a team of 10 and nobody has complained about crashes.

I haven't had any bugs for a long time (pre-v3?), nor have I heard any complaints from my team.

I have some ;( though, it crushed just a few times in a year I've used it. But there are some annoying bugs that don't lead to crushes, like screen redraw problems, glitches with symbols, broken undo (though most of the time it can be fixed by copying all file contents to a new file and resaving it).

Nice, excited to try it out! Lots of good stuff in here. This is something that has been annoying me lately that I'm super happy is being addressed:

New images are now always inserted above the selected layer

EDIT: Alright, so everyone is saying it's super buggy. Here goes nothing.

EDIT2: Not experiencing any bugs I haven't seen before :+1:

Nice Update, I can't wait to read the twenty or so Medium posts this week complaining about extremely obscure and complex bugs not being fixed.

Welp now SVGs are borked. Can't copy/paste them from Illustrator anymore, and saving them out as SVG and trying to import them is doing weeeeird stuff to the shapes.

Everyone seems to have bug issues with Sketch, I really don't.

My issue is just that it is not good enough to replace Illustrator. Object distribution doesn't work, you can't select which part of an object to reference from, you can't get overall X/Y values for multiple objects without manually grouping them, strokes don't snap to edges or alignments until you finish drawing them, etc.

Sure if you were used to doing UI in Photoshop this must be a godsend, but for someone who is used to doing UI in Illustrator it is a significant downgrade except in a few areas (gradient rendering, bitmaps, shadows) which are really less important when it comes to prototyping.

Heck I can't even get objects to not jump up or down when dragging sideways and holding shift, something Illustrator does perfectly (is this even meant to work in Sketch?).

I want fewer bug fixes and more low-level functionality. The reference point selector from Illustrator alone would make my Sketch experience vastly improved (yes I have sent them feedback).

Exactly. I recently tried to move from Illustrator to Sketch and realized how much I'd have to give up. Disappointing, but I've got my fingers crossed for future improvements.

It's not an Illustrator replacement it's a Fireworks replacement.

      1 point
      • Mattan IngramMattan Ingram, over 3 years ago

But Fireworks had states and other interaction details that Sketch doesn't have.

Also I don't remember off the top of my head, but I think Fireworks had a lot of the drawing tools I describe from Illustrator (reference point selector, multi-select x/y values).

True true, but most FW users still went to illustrator to draw icons (then copy and paste the vector data back to FW).

Weird. I have 20 pages with about 15 artboards on each. I can select all the artboards and drag them around without any sluggishness. Seems really fast for me. Few developers haven't kept their plugins updated though. In case anyone is using magicmirror

I'm looking at 2 pages with about 34 dartboards on each page that are full of a lot of layers, effects, etc with pretty smooth performance. Definitely better than the previous version so far.

Haha! I do always feel exactly the same and can't imagine how people are actually able to design things in Photoshop. I mean, I was pretty much a "pro" back in the days when I still used PS, but now I couldn't imagine to build something there.

Since I've upgraded to 3.5 I've noticed that the Noun project app for Mac (I am also using) is not working properly anymore. If you drag or copy/paste from the Noun app to Sketch it imports an empty Group instead of the icon it should. The same problem as some of you had with copy pasting from illustrator. Looks like it's the general svg import problem?

Works quite good for me so far, no new bugs, but also no notable new features. Very underwhelming when you look at "all the new features of 3.5": https://medium.com/minitheory-design/what-s-new-in-sketch-3-5-668d9e872199#.n6hykbu8y

So, which one is actually noteworthy? It's a bunch of bug fixes, not an update for me.
