Ask DN: Aside from interviews, how do you test potential candidates?

over 5 years ago from , Stuff maker

I interviewed for a UI Designer post and the Project Manager asked me to critique their product and send improved mockups of a couple of screens in their app and mobile web as a test. They have given me three days.

Don't get me wrong, I'd happily do those, no problem, but, is that fair, though? Or should that come after they hire my ass?

I would like to know what are other ways of testing potential candidates.

Thank you guys!

Every time company liked me after the first interview, they gave me some sort of task to do before second interview. The only company which hired me after first interview without any task or test is the company I am working for now - I guess I've been lucky that one time!

But I totally get it, recently one company contacted me about a job opportunity and it sounded good until they gave me a task to do - I realised It is not exactly something I would feel comfortable doing or something i would really enjoy doing.

So even though it is often annoying to do something for free before someone hired you, often is a good test for a designer and the company to see if that job is a good fit.
