Ask DN: Any downside to curved monitors?

7 years ago from , Fullstack since before it was a thing.

I'm contemplating spending good cash on a large curved monitor as opposed to 2 flat ones.

Is it Rad or Fad and any observations from UI designers / artists / matte painters?

cheers!

Personally, I find that every piece of kit I have that's off the 'normal' consumer chart (massive hiDPI screens, curved screens, fancy input devices, super high speed internet) takes me another step away from the people who are actually going to be using my whatever it is I output. Sometimes it's an acceptable trade off (e.g. the efficiency gains of working with a large monitor) but I don't think a curved screen would be for me.

Obviously this is also why we test across devices and screens, I just like to keep that gap manageable while I'm working too.

You make a fair point, but generally, when designing a site for example, you would have to take all usage cases into consideration, from the smallest most oddly shaped screens to the largest ones. Same goes for dpi.

Having a large, high resolution screen means you can test for all other screen types.

I have a Samsung Curved Monitor and I love it. Its big enough for me that I can close my laptop and do all of my work on just the screen. The colors look good, not as good as the Dell monitors but as a designer it doesn't distort the colors very much and it is easier on the eyes. I also have my ps4 hooked up to it and the graphics are amazing. Plus the built in speakers help. Hope this answer helps

By the colors not looking as good as the Dell, I suppose it's because you got a sRGB curved screen. I have noticed most of them are sRGB - which would be a strong negative for me.

+1 for an answer on this! I've been thinking about the 34" LG curved one...
