Seriously Sketch, what the f*** !

8 years ago from , Design @ Square

I feel like screaming out loud everytime. Are you experiencing the same issue? It's been a bug since version 0.000000000001 and still isn't fixed. I feel like... Gnnnaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Never seen this! I've seen other things though... I've seen other things...

    Then stop using it.

People having a big old moan, and throwing their toys out of the pram every time they have a bug on Sketch is much more annoying than the bug itself.

Here's the deal; find a workaround.

If finding a workaround offends you, or makes you think "why should I have to find a workaround, I paid for this bla bla bla" then stop using it.

Of course there are bugs, and yeah they annoy me too. But I just suck it up, and move on to the nicer, happier and intriguing wonder of posts here on DN.

Yeah, because Adobe software is famous for not having any bugs ;)

The fanboysm for sketch in this forum is absolutely ridiculous. Let me flip the suggestion: if it bothers you that much, don't read the posts. If you can't avoid it, don't come to Designer News. If you can't avoid that, throw away your computers and go live in a cave. If everything else fails, there's a mission to Mars leaving in a couple years.

Ohhh, you're the chap that wrote that angry post about Sketch and the goodwill of the design community..

        That certainly went down well.

I think it did, I got my answer. Do you often feel the need to "win" online arguments?

I'm wondering where these "intriguing wonder of posts" exist on DN and how you find them. Maybe you can do an AMA?

Was seeing this happening on my files recently. It has everything to do with the line height relative to the font size. If you make the line height big enough, the problem should disappear.

    4 points
    • Frédéric Audet, 8 years ago

Yep, you're right, line-height causes the issue. This is really annoying.

No problem. It's non-obvious. My co-worker Christian showed me, and it was like the angels just started singing.

Maybe update the description to let others know about the solution.

Ah, thank you! I was pulling my hair out on this yesterday and could have sworn I tried that, but apparently not so.

Lord knows I love Sketch, but I'm on the verge of going from 'one of those users that will forgive them anything' to being 'one of those users that tells others to hold off', because they're making some spotty software in comparison to other small design software companies, like Affinity.

These type of threads show up weekly - that's too often.

I'm in the same bat lately. Totally loved Sketch before, but almost no day without a new bug. Almost no feature that works as expected or where you don't have to find a workaround to do what you actually want.

But then, I used Affinity Designer, and came back to Sketch so happily. Not to say that AD is bad (it's actually quite good), but especially for UI design, for clever shortcuts, for these "little" things, Sketch is so much better.

I 've also seen this several times...unfortunately text rendering and text manipulation in Sketch, including the so so so bad "text on path" feature, are awful.

I wonder how effectively does a ***** "censor" a word.

I mean, would anyone say - "Oh well since he used the asterisk I am going to read it as What the Fleh."

I've experienced it. I emailed them when I had the previous version and they said it would be fixed in the next update but the issues still exists amongst many others. Does anyone know if there's a more public space where we can view and lodge bugs?

This is also a major problem of Sketch respectively Bohemian Coding. They do their best to keep the bugs as secret as possible, no forum, no bug tracking software, no nothing. They just don't want us to see how buggy Sketch actually is. I mean, we all know how buggy it is, but if all of the bugs would be exposed to the public then they would be quite fucked up.

Really? The biggest issue I had with Sketch was when anything got moved off the canvas it'd then get ripped out of the hierarchical structure. It's the reason I haven't touched it since.

I am just happy they fixed the bug that kept crashing Sketch every time I hit undo. Although, now I am having trouble with styles updating. We can't win.

I've experienced this although that was several versions ago. Haven't seen it in forever. Random squares keep showing up ultra contrasted though and it takes a zoom in or out to fix it.

Will Comet be the solution or Sketch will be fixed?

I completely lost faith in Bohemian at this point. I know I'm in the minority, but I have no religious affiliation, I just use what's necessary to do my job. Personally I would rather save the money for the Creative Suite (quite expensive) but it's still the most reliable and powerful set of tools out there, much to my chagrin.

I'm hoping Affinity is going to get better rapidly, so far they have been more stable than anything else I've ever used.

Fact is: Sketch is still so much better for UI design, even with it's countless bugs. AD is good, but not as far as feature-complete and optimized for this kind of task. Just used it today, and everything felt so fresh and uncomplicated when I got back to Sketch.

        Project Comet, be our savior.

That's annoying! Tip: when working on big font sizes put line height to auto so it will adjust it big enough and shouldn't glitch.

Haven't seen that over the last couple years on this end. Though I have definitely seen the wonky text editing stuff, which usually resolves itself with a zoom-out and zoom-in to clear the app's mind. Text is a weakness in Sketch.

Could it be a specific font file issue? I've had similar experiences with certain malformed/corrupted font files. Outside of Sketch as well.

I'm currently using Calibre by Klim. I don't think it's a font issue, but a rendering - getting the same results in other fonts...
